As the name suggests its made out of wool. In woven or knitted textiles the basic structure of the fabric is yarn or thread but in wool felt it’s different.
The basic principle of wool felt formation lies in the heart of wool fibers i.e. the protein in the wool which tends to curl and cling together when subjected to heat, moisture and pressing. Both process of manufacturing felt i.e. needling and pressed felting are used to entangle and interlock the fibers.
General Parameters for Wool Felt:
Parameter | Units |
Thickness | Millimeter(mm)/ Inches(“) |
Density | Grams per centimeter cube (gms/cc) |
Dimensions | Millimeter( if in components)/ inches/meters (if length and breath) |
Wool Content | Percentage of the wool in felt (E.g. : SAE F1 grade felt consist of 95% wool) |
(Note: Different standards have different parameters. The above stated parameters will give reader a basic idea about it.)
